CEZ invests over BGN 100 mln in TPP-Varna

The Czech company CEZ will invest more than BGN 100 mln in TPP-Varna in order to enable the plant to continue operation until 2030, stated yesterday Petr Dokladal, Regional Manager for CEZ Bulgaria. The company will invest resources in the construction of sulphur purifying installations in the 4th, 5th and 6th units of the thermal power plant near Varna, specified Kamen Boshnakov, CEO of the TPP. By the end of June, a technology will be selected for the construction of the eco-installations and their construction will start in 2013. The project contractor will be selected after a tender.

The sulphur purifying installations are expected to be ready by the end of 2015. In the beginning of 2016, the first three TPP units will be closed down because they fail to meet EU eco-friendly requirements. The replacement of the fuel facility system of units 4, 5 and 6 is also under consideration, while switching their mode of operation from utilising anthracite coal to volatile one, stated Boshnakov. This will decrease the amount of nitrogen oxides released from the plant.

Through the operation of its units, TPP Varna provides more than 60% of our energy system reserve and plays an important role in crisis situations, while increasing general electricity consumption. In 2011, the plant activated its cold reserve units 41 times, while in the last month, the company never stopped their operation, despite the fact that it was operating at a loss. For every generated megawatt of electricity, Bulgaria loses over BGN 8 and, therefore, it is more favourable for our country to keep the units ready for operation, explained Boshnakov. So far, the TPP has not signed a contract with NEK for the activation of the cold reserve units and it operates solely on a gentleman's agreement. It sold minimum amounts of electricity on the open market last year.
