Vaclav Klaus renders unequivocal support for Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who was on a one-day visit to Bulgaria yesterday, stated for the national media that he fully and definitely supports Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area. He spoke in flattering terms about our country and stated that he would gladly travel to Bulgaria, even if he has to show his passport at the border. "I believe that the problem with your accession to the Schengen agreement will be appropriately addressed soon," summarised the Czech Head of State after his meeting with Rosen Plevneliev. Klaus accused the Netherlands of showing incompetence in terms of their position against the country's accession to the Schengen area. When answering the question of a reporter from the Czech National Radio - whether Holland has committed an act of discrimination, Plevneliev did not answer directly, once again reiterating the official Bulgarian position - that the country meets all formal criteria and, hopefully, in September, "this injustice will be addressed."

Vaclav Klaus was more explicit. The Czech President said that the problem is actually much larger than obvious discrimination. According to him, the Dutch position resulted from "ignorance and underestimation" of the matter.

According to Klaus, after the fall of the communistic regimes, our States became strongly oriented to the West, which, however, proved not to be the best and most successful solution. “It is time to turn to the East and to the South, and Bulgaria could be a key partner of the Czech Republic,” he said.

Rosen Plevneliev wished Czech investments to increase. These have reached around €1 bn. He praised CEZ and Energo Pro for their activity in the country.

Vaclav Klaus joked that, as an economist, he had noticed a recurring tendency in his visits to Bulgaria. While travelling on the plane, he found out that he had visited our country every four years – in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Klaus, who is 70 years old now, promised to come back in 2016 as well, but just as a tourist, because he would not be President then. This is his second term in office after being re-elected in 2008.
