Bulgarian Parliament to disclose the identity of the credit millionaires, who served as agents of the Communist-ear National Security Service

Yesterday, with the vote of 91 MPs in favour and only one against, the Bulgarian Parliament adopted at its first reading the proposed amendments to the Access and Disclosure of Documents and Announcing Affiliation of Bulgarian Citizens to the National State Security (NSS) and the Intelligence Services of the Bulgarian National Armеd Services (BNAS) Act. Pursuant to the new texts, proposed by the Blue Coalition, henceforth the Secret Files Commission would be authorised to inspect politicians for their possible affiliation to the NSS as well as the so-called credit millionaires.

Actually, the entities to be subject to inspection are sole traders, managers and members of management or supervisory body of the companies at the time of withdrawal of loans, which subsequently remained non-serviced.

So far, due to gaps in the legislation, it was impossible to inspect precisely these secret files, announced on behalf of the submitters of the proposal, the Parliamentary Deputy Spokeswoman Ekaterina Mihailova. According to Mihailova, the dependencies and affiliation of the credit millionaires to the Communist-era secret services should become part of the law in order to clarify whether the NSS was involved in the transformation of the Bulgarian economy.

In fact, the more important issue concerns the property consequences of speculative operations, a greater part of which were carried out in the mid-1990s and which are concurrent factor for hyperinflation in Bulgaria at that point, stressed from the rostrum, Yanaki Stoilov from the Coalition for Bulgaria. Stoilov and Pavel Shopov of Ataka party demanded this topic be also related to the Criminal Assets Forfeiture Act.
In fact, more than 10,500 companies are to be subject to inspection, announced the Secret Files Commission's Chairman, Evtim Kostadinov. He cited a list of theBulgarian National Bank from 1997.
