Measures for food safety concerning children and students to be introduced

We have serious gaps in our legislation and must undertake urgent measures to correct them, stated Yordan Voinov, Executive Director of the Food Safety Agency in an interview for Radio Focus on the occasion of the recent case of food poisoning of children in the town of Kyustendil, where the source of the contamination is a staff member. In his words, the first mistake concerns Ordinance No. 11 of the Ministry of Health, which refers to the laboratory tests of staff working in kitchens. "A few years ago, the decree stipulated that a mandatory X-ray test should be applied, but this rule has been repealed. As a result, there is a danger of infections transmitted from the kitchen staff to those who actually consume the food," reckoned Voinov. Another flaw in the legislation relates to the laboratory tests for parasites, which are carried out only at the time of appointment. The nutrition diet of children and students at camps is not properly regulated as well.
