Recycling of household waste to exempt municipalities from eco-taxes

The recycling and composting of household waste will exempt municipalities from the imposition of further environmental taxes, stated in Varna Minister of Environment and Water, Nona Karadjova, reported BTA (Bulgarian Telegraph Agency). It became clear that, by 2020, every EU member-state must utilise at least 50% of the waste which can be recycled. Financial incentives are provided in the new Waste Management Act /WMA/, which is to be adopted by Parliament.

According to her, out of 26 settlements along the Black Sea coast only 20 have facilities, but 14 of these need upgrading. A mere 6 locations on the Black Sea coast have no waste water treatment plants. Five of these are small and the deadline set for the construction of a facility is 2015. The only town with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants without a treatment station is Sozopol, specified Karadjova. So far, the projects related to the water cycle of Varna have cost BGN 140 mln, said the Minister.
