Environmentalists to stage a protest against the outrages along the Black Sea coast

Members of the Civic Ecologic Public Union (CEPU) will stage a protest at 11 a.m. on Saturday in front of the barrier of the Saint Thomas Holiday Village on the road to Arkutino against the attempts of some mayors of seaside municipalities and MPs with personal interests who want to reject the proposal of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW) to ban construction within the 100-metre zone from the sea. This became clear from a press conference held in Burgas on Thursday. At the conference, Emil Georgiev, Chairman of Political Club Ecoglasnost and member of the leadership team of the new union, comprising the environmental parties and NGOs, said: “The protest is against the willful actions of the tycoon Ivo Prokopiev and his entourage, including Philip Harmandjiev and Yovo Nikolov. The fact that they have purchased real estate property on the Saint Stephan cape and the Dalyan Chaika bay dirt cheap and have probably committed tax fraud is in the competence of tax authorities. We are protesting against the arbitrariness of Lyudmil Stoykov and Simeon Peshov. Regretfully, the seizure of plots along the Black Sea costs has become usual practice, but we are also becoming notorious with the unprecedented misappropriation of part of the road network connecting the settlement of Kavatsite and the town of Primorsko by the tycoons Stoykov and Peshov. I mean the road, closed with a crash barrier, passing along the Duni Holiday Village and the section of the road passing along the Saint Thomas Holiday Village and leading to Arkutino and the Ropotamo River, also closed with a barrier. In this way, the two tycoons become sole users of these road sections and undisturbed dispose of hundreds of decares of protected forests, sand dunes and the reserves of Alepu, Arkutino and Ropotamo. We are protesting against the consecutive attempts to erect buildings on the beach of Harmanite and a hotel on the oldest necropolis in the Balkans. We are protesting against the destruction of sand dunes, which are public state property and have been declared a natural sight and a protected area under Resolution № 4 of the Berlin Convention of 1996”.

“The protest of ecologists is not against tourism at the seaside. On the contrary - we are protesting against the attempts of some mayors of Black Sea municipalities, led by the Mayor of Sozopol Panayot Reyzi and some MPs from the Burgas region with private interests, who want to reject MRDPW’s proposal to ban any construction within the 100-metre zone from the sea during the forthcoming second reading of the Black Sea Coast Development Act. We support the proposal of MRDPW and we are confident that this will preserve the beauty of nature along the Black Sea coast, which is a sure guarantee for attracting tourists,” stated Emil Georgiev.
