Wastewater plants worth some BGN 10 mln to be constructed along the Black Sea coast


Three contracts worth BGN 100 mln for the construction of sewage treatment plants for processing the waste water from the big seaside resorts of Golden Sands, Albena as well as of the towns of Balchik and of Tervel were signed today at the Ministry of Environment and Water. The projects will be financed under Operational Programme (OP) Environment. "These grants are important not only for the region but also for protecting the Black Sea coast," stated Minister of Environment, Nona Karadjova, during the signing ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov as well.

The project worth BGN 48 mln of the Municipality of Varna will expand and modernise the wastewater treatment plant at the Golden Sands resort. It also envisages the construction of a sewerage system in Varna's residential complex "Alen Mak".

The treatment plant in the Golden Sands resort was actually built in the 1970s. Its capacity is about 13,000 tourists, while during the summer season it serves some 32,000 holidaymakers in this resort alone. Besides, it is also used for processing the waste water of the neighboring resorts such as Sunny Day, Riviera, Journalist, explained experts.

The project of the Municipality of Balchik costs BGN 32 mln. The funds will be utilised for the reconstruction and modernisation of the sewarage treatment plant for processing the waste water coming from the town of Kranevo and Albena resort. The third project of the Tervel Municipality includes the expansion and renovation of the effluent treatment plant as well as the construction and reconstruction of over 20-km long sewerage and water network.

In fact, so far over BGN 1.2 bn have been transferred under OP Environment and under the ISPA programme, clarified Nona Karadjova. Over the past two and a half years, the actual payments of BGN 800 mln have been remitted. In fact, overall BGN 340 mln out of them were granted under the OP Environment, while a total of BGN 460 mln were transferred under the ISPA programme.Half of the funds amounting to BGN 1.8 bn were contracted under the OP Environment, while the estimates are that the entire projected OP financial resources would be negotiated by mid-2012.
