Dogan's attacker remains in custody

The Regional Court in Sofia kept Oktay Enimehmedov, 25, in custody after he aimed a gun at the former Movement for Rights and Freedoms' leader Ahmed Dogan on Saturday. Enimehmedov was charged with a murder threat and hooliganism, prosecutor Chavdar Zhelezhchev told journalists.

"I got up on the stage where Dogan was and then I aimed the gun at him but my intention was to scare him, not to kill him," Enimehmedov told the Regional Court in Sofia.

"I have respect for the laws in Bulgaria. The state system is a priority of mine. Maybe I did what I did because of the stage in life I am at or because of my ideals. I'm not sorry. My only regret is that the gun misfired," added Enimehmedov, who was brought to the court under increased police protection.

"So far as my past is concerned, I've committed crimes and paid my dues for them. For years now, I've been trying to contribute to the public good. I could be viewed as a threat to MRF's secret society," Enimehmedov said. "As for hiding, I think someone else might want this so they can try to eliminate me. My hope is for a fair trial," concluded Enimehmedov who is represented by a court-appointed attorney.
