Nearly one-third of Bulgarians have resorted to methods of non-traditional medicine

30% of Bulgarians have resorted to homeopaths, herbalists, folk healers and other representatives of the so-called non-conventional medicine in order to solve their health problems, according to data of the special nationally representative survey of BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa daily.

The healing visits to folk healers and herbalists are the most popular method of treatment after the standard medicine. Some 16% of Bulgarians have resorted to the services of this kind of healers, while this percentage is significantly higher among people over 55 years of age, as well as among residents of small towns.

Homeopaths rank second in attendance. In fact, almost one-tenth of the Bulgarian population has visited such a healer at least once. Unlike the folk healers, homeopaths are most popular among residents of the Sofia capital. 16% of the population of Sofia has treated its health problems by this treatment practice.

The most widespread view on non-traditional medicine in general relates to the opinion that, as a whole, it is more healthy for the patient's organism compared to the conventional widespread medicine which, in the general case, uses chemical-based medicines for treatment. Over one-third (37%) of those surveyed expressed the above statement. It is most strongly supported by the majority of young people (18-25 years of age) and the inhabitants of the capital, as well as the so-called modern people.

One quarter of respondents, in turn, back the thesis that the non-traditional medicine treats not only the symptoms of a disease, but also its causes. This thesis is widespread mostly among people with higher education and more modern Bulgarians.
