Trade Unions: Intentional non-payment of salaries should be criminalised

“The intentional non-payment of wages should be criminalised,” urged syndicalist from the Confederation of Labour Podkrepa and the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB). The statement was released yesterday after the Advisory Board meeting of the management of both trade unions. “A signal was submitted to the headquarters of CITUB reporting over BGN 450 mln in unpaid wages and employers released staggering data of BGN 1.9 bn in unpaid wages and benefits," said Vice President of CITUB Valentin Nikiforov.

Syndicalists from the Confederation of Labour Podkrepa and CITUB insist further that companies which do not pay salaries should not be eligible for EU funding and public procurement procedures. They demanded that workers should be able to get the salaries due via receiving orders. At present, workers can only sue their employers. CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov said that there were a total of 295,000 more unemployed people on the labour market in 2010, compared to 2009. He explained that funds for wages paid in the country decreased by BGN 1.2 bn - from BGN 17.573 bn in 2009 to BGN 16.380 bn in 2010.
