Naoto Kan: Japan is suffering its worst crisis since World War II

Antonia Kotseva

Japan is suffering its worst crisis since World War II, stated in his address to the nation, the Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, cited by the BBC. The tragedy was caused by the devastating Friday earthquake of Magnitude 9 on the Richter scale, followed by a tsunami and growing danger of leakage of radiation.

The most serious concern of the Japanese authorities is containment of the spread of radiation due to the accident suffered by the Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant at Fukushima Prefecture located about 250 km away northeast of Tokyo. The Japanese authorities declared a state of emergency there and 11 nuclear reactors were shut down.

Yesterday, a state of emergency was also declared at Onagava NPP after a radiation leakage was detected near its reactors, reported AFP. The authorities reassured that the situation there was under control.

The number of victims might exceed 10,000 people only in the Miyagi Prefecture being most affected by the tsunami waves, according to information submitted by the Head of the prefectural police, Naoto Takeuchi.

Yesterday, across Japan, the death of 3,000 people was confirmed, while those wounded numbered over 1,800. In the northern part of the country, millions of citizens remained without drinking water. About 2.5 million of people are without electricity. Over 380,000 people have been evacuated.
