Global FDI returns to its pre-crisis levels

This year, global FDI (foreign direct investment) returned to its pre-crisis levels, up to $1.4 trl - $1.6 trl. Next year, it is expected to reach $1.7 trl and in 2013 - $1.9 trl. Besides, the indicator is expected to exceed its peak of 2007, according to an annual survey of the global investment trends of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) presented yesterday by the Bulgarian Investment Agency (BIA). Last year, global cash flows amounted to $1.24 trl or 15% less than their pre-crisis level and 37% less than the 2007 peak. This optimistic scenario come about only in the absence of any unexpected economic shocks, although risk factors are present.

For the first time, developing countries and those in transition attracted jointly more than half of global FDI or $574 bn. Half of the 20 countries "most welcoming investment" in 2010 were precisely fast growing economies or those in transition. Moreover, the investments made by these economies abroad also reached record levels. They increased by 21% and currently constitute 29% of total capital flows abroad. In fact, 6 of the top 20 investors are fast growing economies.

Last year, Bulgaria attracted a total of $2.17 bn, while in 2007 the record investment in our economy was $12.38 bn, read also the report. Local companies invested $238 mln abroad in 2010. Bulgaria ranked third among our competitors. The most preferred trade destination was the Czech Republic, where $6 bn were invested, while investments in Romania stood at about $3 bn. In Serbia, FDI was 50% of the Bulgarian one and in Slovakia - four or five times lower. At the end of this year, the amount of foreign investments in the Bulgarian industry and energy sector is expected to maintain last year's levels and reach  €1 bn - €1.5 bn, forecast BIA's CEO, Borislav Stefanov.
