OLAF is investigating 64 frauds with EU funds in Bulgaria

The European Anti-Fraud Office OLAF is investigating two times more frauds with European funds allocated for the agricultural sector in Bulgaria than in 2009, when our country became the European leader in this area, showed data submitted by the organisation to the BNR (Bulgarian National Radio). The active OLAF investigations of fraud and money abuses in the agricultural sector in Bulgaria are 64. The SAPARD Programme, along with the funds granted for agricultural subsidies and rural development, are being scrutinised.

By comparison, by the end of 2009, when we set a European record, the active fraud investigations in this area were 26, out of a total of 32 across the EU. Then, Bulgaria was the country with the largest total number of investigations in various areas - 68 for a second consecutive year. Today, these are 85. The structural funds from which we get the money for regional development, environment, competitiveness and development of human resources rank after agricultural programmes - there are 9 running investigations and 24 other cases are being evaluated as to whether there is sufficient data for the initiation of investigations.

The section "Foreign aid" surprisingly ranks third. These are the means allocated by the EU for boosting the development of third countries - there are 8 active investigations involving Bulgaria. Another 3 are underway for the smuggling of cigarettes.
