Domestic tourism reports 2% growth in a year

Domestic tourism registered a 2% growth in 2010. Bulgarians spent BGN 2.6 bn on travelling last year, 74% of that amount – on trips within the country. This is the result of the campaign for the promotion of domestic tourism, reported yesterday by the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism.
“Less than half of the BGN 5.4 mln under the project for the promotion of domestic tourism in Bulgaria has been agreed,” said Iva Yakimova from the Ministry. Thus, nearly BGN 3 mln remain and will be spent in order to continue the campaign next year. “The online promotion of Bulgaria among our fellow countrymen will certainly grow,” she added. The project is among the nine projects for national marketing worth a total of €32 mln under Operational Programme Regional Development.

Three waves of television advertising with 300 broadcasts, three waves of radio advertising, 70 advertising slots and 40 publications on specific topics, a website for events, 1,000 posters, 500 conference packages and participation in tourism exchanges in the country were made within the campaign’s framework. The final results will become clear this summer.

The National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported yesterday a 4.1% increase in Bulgarians’ trips abroad for March. The greatest interest was in Russia which attracted 32.5% more Bulgarians, followed by Greece. Foreign guests to our country increased by 11.3%, most of them from Russia (42.5%), Serbia (38.4%) and the Ukraine (26.3%).
