The automobile sector reports 17% growth in sales

The sales of new cars in Bulgaria marked a stir-up in the first quarter of the year and reported 17.24% growth, showed data by the Association of Car Manufacturers and their Authorised Representatives for Bulgaria. According to the statistics, in the period January - March, a total of 4,638 new cars were sold, while a year earlier the respective figure stood at 3,956. In March alone, a total of 1,816 cars were sold, compared to 1,358 automobiles in February and 1,464 in the first month of the year.

Overall, in the first quarter of the year, there was a major stir-up on the market for new cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles, which recorded an increase of 18.8% on an annual base. The data shows that the industry is recovering. In the first quarter of the year, a total of 250 new buses and trucks, or 90 units more, were sold than in the first three months of 2010. A total of 62 motorcycles were sold - 20 more, compared to the respective period of the previous year. 

ACM's data also shows significant shifts in ranking in terms of the sales of automobiles. Volkswagen moved from third to first position, reporting a growth in car sales of 71% on an annual basis. In the first three months of last year, a total of 331 Volkswagen automobiles were sold, while in the period January -March this year, a total of 567 units were purchased. Thus, Volkswagen now accounts for 12.2% of the total number of sales in the first quarter of the year. Toyota and Ford currently lag behind the German brand. Toyota recorded an increase in sales of 37.3% or 427 units, while Ford achieved a rise of 9.5% or 414 units. The three top brands in terms of sales concluded over 400 transactions, while only Peugeot managed to cross this threshold last year.
