DSB calls upon the SJC panel to resign

Yesterday, the DSB (Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party) called upon the members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) to resign and amend the Bulgarian Constitution in the chapter on the judicial authority. According to them, should the Basic Law needs any amendments, they refer exactly to the judiciary.

The resignations of the senior magistrates have already been requested by the Bulgarian Judges Association and the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, which even organised a mass e-mailing campaign dubbed ''Farewell to SJC."

Ivan Kostov's adherents waive their right to deliver proposals for new SJC members, announced also the party. "We will not do it because an increasingly disgraceful and obscene process is running in the judicial authority and the SJC," explained DSB Deputy Chairwoman Ekaterina Michaylova. She added that it was pointless to nominate candidates for vacant posts "in a failed council''. Besides, she reckoned that it "had completely compromised itself by its appointment decisions and improper behavior''. In her words, being a SJC member has become indecent.

Currently, the SJC vacancies are four. Two of them were even released nearly two years ago when two members left because of the scandal over the notorious businessman Krassyo. They were elected from the parliamentary quota. Therefore, the National Assembly should elect their successors. Due to the designation of the new Head of SCC (Sofia City Court) two weeks ago, judges Kapka Kostova and Galina Zaharova from the judiciary quota left SJC. Actually, the new members should be selected by the magistrates.
