The Danube Bridge to be repaired for the first time in 56 years

“Some BGN 1.6 mln will be invested in the rehabilitation of the Danube Bridge. The money will be extended by the State budget,” Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Rossen Plevneliev said at the launching of the repair works yesterday. This is the first repair of the facility for the last 56 years. According to Plevneliev, the project should be completed within two months. The pavement and hydro-insulation will be completely replaced and the joints filled. The traffic will be alleviated by a special regime, redirecting oversized vehicles to the ferry connections.

“An overhaul of the facility has been projected for next year,” specified Plevneliev. He added that a response from Romania was expected regarding the repairs of their side of the bridge, after Bulgaria had already launched rehabilitation. “The Railway Infrastructure National Company is also preparing a project for rehabilitation of the railroad on the bridge,” said the Minister. It projects the construction of a new, wider fly over with greater traffic capacity in Russe.

“The navigation capacity of the Danube river should increase to 20% in the next nine years,” said Plevneliev during a conference on the Danube Strategy, held in Russe yesterday. He explained that only 7% of the river’s capacity was being used at present The first pilot projects are expected to be launched in 2012.
