Some 55 Bulgarians arrested for car thefts and drug trafficking

Some 55 people were arrested in a major operation, named "Shock", conducted all over the country and abroad yesterday. "The Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (CDCOC) was in charge of the operation, performed under the coordination and with the participation of Europol and the Secret Service as well as the management of the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office,” announced Minister of Interior, Tsvetan Tsvetanov. The action was initiated following a request by Italy, related to the investigation of a criminal group for drug trafficking and car thefts from the EU in Bulgaria. The Minister stated for Focus agency that “the "Shock" operation was an extremely well-prepared action, in favour of Bulgaria's full membership in the Euro-Atlantic structures. It contributed to the overall security of European countries. "

People with European arrest warrants, dealing with drug trafficking, car theft, etc were detained in the police action, which started around 6:00 am yesterday. Most of the arrested persons are from the capital - Sofia, from Plovdiv, Kyustendil, Gabrovo, Stara Zagora, Shumen, Varna and Burgas.

Because of the operation, checkpoints were established on the entry-exit points of the city and the region of Varna. In the Blagoevgrad region, the action was mainly focused on the two border crossings with Greece – Ilinden and Kulata, near the town of Gotse Delchev, and on the border with Macedonia - the Zlatarevo checkpoint, near the town of Petrich.

One of the suspected persons was detained in Burgas. There are checkpoints at the entrances/exits of all towns in the region.

In Sofia, lawyer Mariana Todorova complained of police violence against her client, who had been arrested in the "Shock" operation. She said that a house dog had been shot during the detention of her client, although nobody resisted the arrest.
