Some 500 illegal billboards to be dismantled by the end of 2011

The dismantling of 500 illegal billboards is underway. Last year some 700 panes were taken off, said Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works for bTV.

According to him, there are more than 7,000 billboards on the entire national road network. Different countries implement different policies towards these. In Greece, for example, these are on the side. The proposal of the Bulgarian Branch Association of Road Safety is for these to be completely removed. A dialogue with all parties concerned is scheduled for September, said the minister. Revenues from billboard fees stood at BGN 5.5 mln in 2010.

We must decide whether it is worth giving up this income at the expense of a good idea, said Plevneliev. The removal of all facilities can happen after the approval of the National Assembly alone. Under the current legislation, the distance between two billboards must be at least 300 meters, and their stretch from the axis of the road should be minimum 3 m. All facilities, which are not placed, in line with this requirement, will be declared illegal and removed. The statistics show that, some 11 people have been killed in billboard crashes so far.

Dealers who collect fees of BGN 70 or more for an umbrella and lounge will be inspected by the National Revenue Agency (NRA). Agency representatives will be involved in working groups, which now are carrying out inspections at the sea coast. They will monitor what is the declared pricing of the services and whether these values correspond to the figures in the income statements.

The second inspection of the Black Sea beaches will continue until the end of August. The final results are expected to be announced in mid-September. Last year, some BGN 650,000 were collected from fines on concessionaires and 10 contracts were terminated due to repeated violations.
