EU: There would be ongoing monitoring of the Bulgarian justice system

The Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, monitoring justice and home affairs in Bulgaria and Romania remains an appropriate mechanism to assist the two countries in achieving sustainable results in the field, reads the official communiqué of the Press Service of the EU Council, released yesterday. The mechanism must remain in force until the latest EU member states achieve the expected results.

the Ministers welcomed the decision of the European Commission for presenting a summary report on the developments in the two Balkan countries in the summer of 2012 for the development of the two Balkan countries. In late July, the last monitoring report was published. At that time, the EU Council recommended that Bulgaria takes further steps towards a fundamental reform of the judicial system and works for the effective improvement of the accountability and professional practice within the judicial and investigating authorities.

"This is a wake up slap for the GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government as one sees the discrepancy between their desire for improvements and the actual results achieved. The EU sees the real and objective results and what actually should be achieved further," commented Chetin Kazak,  MP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms.

The European institution also emphasized that our country must adopt a new law on forfeiture of criminal assets and should guarantee the full implementation of the Law on Conflict of Interests. Besides, it must strengthen the administrative capacity in the public procurement sector.

According to the EU Council, representatives of the judiciary in Bulgaria have shown real commitment for implementing the reforms, while only "some important court appointments failed to comply with the standards of transparency and trust."
