Mor Karbasi are a fascinating new sound from the Middle East, fronted by a Jerusalem-born London-based singer of Jewish, Moroccan and Persian heritage who has chosen as the bearer of her musical expression one of the most sonorous languages in existence – Ladino, the language of the Jews of Spain.
Although she is still very young, her magical voice has taken her to all corners of Europe. Her Roza is one of the most beautifully executed songs from anyone in recent years, displaying a musical ability that could, in time, put her alongside the likes of Mariza and some of the greatest singers in history. Until then, let us enjoy the youthful enthusiasm of a singer on the rise. In future we’ll be able to say, with a hint of pride, that we saw Mor Karbasi before she became a star, at a time when she could still be glimpsed up close. Like composer Mor of mixed Persian and Moroccan heritage musical motifs, that can be traced back to the exiled Jews of Spain -hence her passion for the Andalucian and Ladino styles.



She is directly descended from both Moroccan and Persian Jews, and is a fan of flamenco, which provides a strong flavour throughout all her songs. Her early musical performances were with Pena Flamenca in Jerusalem, and her mother played Moroccan piyyutim (liturgical poems) and sang Andalucian Jewish ballads at their home. She continues to be a constant influence on her daughter.

Her usual shows are made up of Spanish guitar, and percussion, occasionally piano which she plays herself. Other special guest instrumentalists such as violin, cello and flute players have been incorporated whenever possible, to great effect. Mor writes her own songs in Ladino, Hebrew, English and Spanish, and also arranges and sings traditional Ladino, Hebrew and Moroccan songs, and also collaborates with some some of the top quality artis.
