New water treatment plants for the water of Sofia

Two new water treatment plants will process the water for the capital. The facilities were launched yesterday by Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadjova and Deputy Mayor of Sofia Maria Boyadjiyska, reported BTA. They are located near the villages of Mala Tsarkva and Pasarel, and their construction was financed under the ISPA programme. The total investment for both facilities amounts to over BGN 2.8 mln. Clean Waters Consortium – 2009 was the project contractor.

The Mala Tsarkva water treatment plant mechanically purifies water from the Beli Iskar dam and will serve about 250, 000 inhabitants of the districts of Sofia Municipality: Bistritsa, Zhelznitsa, Pancharevo, Kokalyane, Plana, etc. Drinking water will be provided to Samokov and other settlements in the municipality through the Rila water –main.

The investment in the water cycle of Sofia amounts to BGN 110 mln, said Karadjova. She reminded that an extension of the deadline for the absorption of the money under the program by the end of 2011 had been agreed. According to Karadjova, the water from the Rila - main will be one of the cleanest in Europe. Full treatment of the drinking water from the Iskar dam will be made in the unit at Pasarel.
