The Ministry of Environment and Waters to decide on the development of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis project

“Next week, the Ministry of Environment and Waters will decide whether to approve the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the construction of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline,” stated ministry officials yesterday. The administration of Nona Karadjova should decide whether the proposal of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline (TBP) Company for the construction of the pipeline should be submitted to public discussion. The EIA of the project was returned three times and adjusted by the operator TBP. The original idea was for the oil to be unloaded through a buoy into the sea, but the Ministry required an option for the tankers to be able to come alongside a quay near the port of Rosenets and to transfer the oil into the pipe there. The Burgas-Alexandroupolis project has an approved assessment for compatibility with the Natura 2000 ecological network because parts of the pipeline’s route pass through protected areas.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has repeatedly stated that he will not allow the pipeline to be built because this will destroy tourism at the southern Black Sea coast. Russia is a majority owner of the pipeline, as it holds a 51% stake in the project, while Greek companies and the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance own a 24.5% share each. Two months ago, the Russian shareholders said that they are ready to give up the project, if a decision on its development is not made soon.
