Prime Minister promises money for the repair of UBA’s building

PM Boyko Borissov promised yesterday to ensure funds for the repair and refurbishment of the Union of Bulgarian Artists’ (UBA) building at 6 Shipka St in Sofia. The news was broken by Dimitar Grozdanov, Vice President of UBA, after a meeting with PM Borissov at the Council of Ministers, attended by Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov as well.

The UBA should draft a plan for the necessary resources and suggest a specific amount to be set in the 2012 budget.

A day earlier, the Union announced that it will confer honorary titles to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture for “their enormous contribution” for allocating the building at 6 Shipka St to UBA. Let us remind our readers that the management boards of UBA and of St. Kliment Ohridski University had been arguing about the ownership of this real estate property for almost three decades. The decision to express gratitude by conferring honorary titles, however, was sharply objected to by Professor Velislav Minekov, Chairman of UBA’s Supervisory Board. In turn, his colleagues from the Management Board explained that everybody who had contributed to the development of UBA has been conferred honorary awards, regardless of whether they are artists or not.

After the meeting, Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov commented that there will be no greater reward for him than the fact that the artists will have their ‘home’ where they can create freely and and at ease. Asked whether the Prime Minister has talent (it is known that PM Borissov likes to draw), Rashidov replied: “He makes good drawings.” He added that Borissov can still develop his talent at a mature age, like Gauguin and Picasso.

“Sylvester Stallone paints, he shows his pictures at exhibitions and sells paintings for €50,000. Why should PM Borissov not draw if he likes it,” commented Vezhdi Rashidov.
