Sofia Municipality seeks private partners for the implementation of 20 strategic projects

The Chief Architect of Sofia, Petar Dikov announced yesterday that in 2012, the Municipality would rely increasingly on public-private partnership for the implementation of strategic projects in Sofia city.

He listed at least 20 key priorities seeking funding under this scheme. They involve the construction of a new national stadium, underground downtown parking garages, tram and railcar manufacturing plant, a new winter sports hall in the Mladost residence complex and even reconstruction of the sports hall Arena Armeec. In fact, investor interest has already been expressed, specified Dikov.

The new Chairman of Sofia Municipal Council (SMC), Elen Gerdzhikov defined Dikov's presentation as "very interesting", but stressed that in order to implement the projects, the Municipality must find investors.

The first project under the scheme of public-private partnership, which the Chief Architect of Sofia announced, referred to the concession of Sofia's West Park. In fact, the SMC has envisaged for the construction of children's complex, which will replace the closed Sofia Land amusement park.

The second project relates to the reconstruction of the Vazrazhdane Park and the construction of sports-rehabilitation center with hot mineral spring. The third project refers to the development of mineral springs of the Central Mineral Baths, Sofia and Milin kamak (Milin stone), which have the enormous flow rate of over 20 liters per second. There is also an idea for these springs to be utilised by the Sofia's Spartak swimming pool and even by the NPC (National Palace of Culture), Sofia. The fourth project is also pertaining to the development of the mineral baths of Sofia. The fifth project seeking a private partner relates to the construction of aqua park near the village of Chepintsi.

Site for a new national stadium still to be seleted
The sixth project, developed by experts of the Chief Architect refers to the construction of the long-awaited national stadium.

 "I am convinced that this year, reconstruction works will start at least in one Sofia stadium, so that after these are completed, the facility will meet all EU standards. There are three proposals delivered by the Sofia's district administration for the actual construction site of the new modern stadium. It could be at the Vrazhdebna residence quarter, at the the 4^th kilometer district and on the place of Georgi Asparuhov Stadium. There are other two proposal for reconstruction site: the old Slavia or Bulgarska Armia stadiums, said Petar Dikov.
