Brussels approves five routes of the TEN-T network in our country

“The European Commission has finally approved the extension of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), including five more routes in it,” Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski said when speaking about the new transport policy of the European Union (EU). These routes are: part of the Hemus highway, the high-speed roads Ruse-Shumen, Varna-Durankulak, Plovdiv-Asenovgrad-Rudozem and Rila - from Dupnitsa via Samokov to Ihtiman. Part of the new transport policy of the EU is the construction of 10 intermodal terminals in the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse, Lom, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Vidin, Dragoman and Svilengrad. There are also plans to build a new river port at Silistra. The projects will be financed during the next programming period of Operational Programme Transport - 2014-2020. Minister Moskovski added the talks were held for giving a priority to the Sofia-Gorna Oryahovitsa-Ruse-Bucharest route and the road section Sofia-Veliko Tarnovo-Ruse-Bucharest after the year 2020.

“European funds of about €4 bn will be needed for the implementation of projects in the 2014-2020 period,” Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova specified. According to her, a priority for her ministry will be the drafting of the projects in order to secure the maximum amount of funding. She commented that the extended TEN-T network and corridors would give an opportunity to our country to get additional financing for more high-speed roads and will bring about better connections and cross-border cooperation with Romania and the other neighbouring countries.
