GERB Cabinet to grant some BGN 6 mln for student scholarships

In times of crisis, the GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government is increasing the budget by BGN 171.2 mln and is granting additional subsidies for student scholarship programmes at the amount of BGN 6 mln, stated yesterday the Minister of Education, Youth and Science, Sergey Ignatov to the student leaders from 38 countries, who arrived in Bulgaria for the 61st General Assembly of the European Students' Union.

As a great achievement of the GERB Cabinet, he described the differential funding for different programmes in Bulgarian universities. He also promised a 25% increase in the subsidies for the top-ranked institutions in 2012. According to the assessment of the Education Minister, the GERB government prides itself on the student scholarship programmes and the introduction of the rating system for universities.

"This rating system is intended not only for the universities, but for the individual degree programmes as wll, thus enabling the Bulgarian students to make their own assessment. For example, they can select their own professor and campus. Thus, they can draw up their own rating in order to find this particular university department and faculty," explained Sergey Ignatov.
