Diana Kovacheva is the new Minister of Justice

“Diana Kovacheva, who is Executive Director of the Transparency International - Bulgaria, will be the new Minister of Justice,” announced, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov after his meeting with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Fredrik Reinfeldt, yesterday.

Kovacheva takes office after Margarita Popova was elected Vice President in November. Borissov explained that he had already offered the post to Kovacheva and she had accepted. He said he would present her to the media after the adoption of the budget. The Prime Minister was clear that she was very well received in Brussels. According to him, Kovacheva has experience in dealing with foreign institutions.

She admitted yesterday morning for BNR, that she was invited by the Prime Minister to assume the post. Kovacheva stated that it was a preliminary conversation, not a formal invitation. "For me, such a position would be challenging," she said.

Diana Kovacheva has a PhD in international law and international relations, as the topic of her PhD study was "Creating the International Criminal Court and Key Aspects of its Jurisdiction." She is Master in European Law from Sofia University, and MBA from the Nancy 2 University in France, where she defended the thesis "The Role of OLAF for the Protection of EU Financial Interests." She has a good command of English, French and Russian. In the period between 2001 and 2002, she was a Senior Expert at the Ministry of Justice in the International Cooperation and International Assistance Direction. Since 2002, she has been Executive Director of Transparency International-Bulgaria.
