Rosen Plevneliev is the new President of Bulgaria according to sociologists

The candidate of the ruling party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) Rosen Plevneliev has won the presidential elections in Bulgaria, according to data of all the leading sociological agencies as of 20.00 hrs today, made public after the end of the election day at 19.00 hrs.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), some 41.57% of the Bulgarian citizens entitled to vote had cast their ballot by 17.00 hrs today. According to Alpha Research polling agency, the election activity was 47%.

GALLUP announced that the couple of presidential candidates Rosen Plevneliev and Margarita Popova had won with 55.3% against their opponents from BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party), Ivaylo Kalfin and Stefan Danailov. According to Sova Harris, GERB’s nominees won with 57%, and according to MBMD – with 56.7%.

“For the first time over the last 20 years, a President was elected in Bulgaria without the brokerage of the ethnic Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF)," stated Tsvetan Tsvetanov, head of GERB’s election headquarters, immediately after the end of the election day. He thanked all who worked for the victory of the party, stating that GERB will probably have mayors in 16 municipalities. The ruling party will have 1,601 municipal councillors in the country, or 608 more than in 2007.

GERB won decisively in Varna, Ruse, Stara Zagora, Yambol and Blagoevgrad and was leading with about 1%-5% in Plovdiv, Pleven and Smolyan. CEC must announce the final results within 48 hours after the end of the election day.
