A total ban on smoking to be introduced as of June, 2012

A total ban on smoking in enclosed public places will be introduced as of June 1, 2012, stipulates the amendment to the Health Act proposed by the meeting of the GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government yesterday. The only exception will be airports which will be equipped with special smoking premises.

Smoking will be prohibited in the courtyards of schools and nurseries, as well as in social institutions for children and student dormitories.

"This practice is being applied all over the world because this cigarette scourge must be curbed. The smoking ban will be a gift for Bulgarian children on their holiday on June 1," said Boyko Borissov. He expressed hope that the proposal will be accepted by the National Assembly.

 "The date June 1 was not chosen randomly because it is the beginning of the summer season, which will allow the owners of establishments to adapt to the new smoking ban,'' explained Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov. He reminded that the GERB government proposed the amendment two years ago, while giving a grace period to restaurant holders so that they can adapt to the introduction of the measure.
The project also envisages the introduction of measures for restricting the use of energy drinks by children. Their sale will be banned for all persons under 18 years of age on the territory of schools, nurseries, kindergartens and hospitals. The ban will apply to sports and social events for students.

The draft bill will change the procedure for receiving a medical expertise for children under 16 years of age. Instead of being performed by children's territorial expert medical commissions (TEMCs), as is the case, the medical certificates will be issued by TEMC panels with the participation of specialists in paediatrics.
