Electronic theory tests for candidate drivers to be introduced as of the end of September

As of the end of September, candidates for driving licences will have to make electronic theory tests, Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski announced while presenting the new system, adding that the tests would be checked with a portable electronic system. The exam for candidate drivers will comprise three theory tests, each of 15 questions. Currently, there are 60 questions in the test. The time for completing the test will remain unchanged at 40 minutes and the maximum number of points that can be collected is 97. At least 87 points guarantee success. The new system will minimise the possibility of cheating, explained Moskovski.

The system for checking the tests will be supplied by the Temaks company under a contract with Executive Agency Automobile Administration. In addition to 60 devices for checking the tests, the company will also supply the electronic tests and will be paid BGN 9 including VAT for each set of tests used. About 5,000 sets are usually used a year.

More than BGN 300,000 will be saved from the replacement of paper tests by electronic ones, specified the Transport Minister. He added that the electronic tests would cost nearly BGN 45,000 a year, compared to BGN 350,000 paid until now. The fee for the exam will go up from BGN 12.50 to BGN 20.
