NHIF: Violations in maternity ward hospitals in Sofia established in 10% of the cases inspected

The percentage of violations in maternity ward hospitals in Sofia for the August-October period was 10%, showed the unscheduled inspections carried out by the National Healthcare Insurance Fund (NHIF) due to the more frequent recent cases of women dying in childbirth. NHIF’s teams inspected the Second Municipal Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology Sheinovo, as well as the maternity ward hospitals St. Sofia, Tokuda, St. Anna, Vita, Dr. Shterev, Maichin Dom and Lozenets, and 777 cases were investigated. The inspectors established several cases of missing data about the mandatory tests for syphilis and discharging of young mothers with a pathological level of leukocytes and of progressively declining haemoglobin in the blood.

Twenty violations were established when the activities under clinical paths were performed by professionals who were not mentioned in the lists of physicians, selected by the respective hospitals. NHIF’s inspectors also found a number of gaps in the medical records. In two of the hospitals there were no publicly accessible lists of the price of clinical paths and of free medical services. The absence of this information violates the rights of patients, NHIF stated. For each specific violation, NHIF’s controlling bodies imposed a fine in the range of BGN 200 and BGN 500.
