Bulgarian Society of Neurology with a branch at Head of the Department of Neurology at the First Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment in Sofia

Neurologists from Sofia set up a branch of the Bulgarian Society of Neurology at the First Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment (MHAT) - Sofia. The event was opened by Professor Doctor Ivan Milanov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Society of Neurology and national consultant in neurology. Milanov reminded the participants the organisation's mission. He explained that recently it had focused mostly on organising national conferences and congresses, which led to decreased interest in participation in the organization.

He stressed that the Society of Neurologists should take its due place among other scientific and research associations in our country and abroad as well as develop policies in the field of neuroscience and health protection.The management of the Bulgarian Society of Neurology outlined several priority tasks for implementation.

Among them is the establishment of regional district structures of the Society. Every such entity will carry out independent scientific research as well as defend the interests of neurologists, posing  the problems to the management. Another priority would be the organisation of trainings for neurologists, according to the EU standards. Courses for GPs would also be organized so as to acquaint them better with neurological diseases.
We need to also strengthen our contacts with other EU associations of neurology, members of the association  said.

The Sofia-based neurological community must be well organised since it is a leading one in terms of the number of its members: more than 300 people. Prof. Milanov proposed Prof. Dimitar Maslarov,Head of the Department of Neurology at the First Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment (MHAT) - Sofia, as Chairman of the Sofia branch of the Association.Ultimately, Maslarov was elected by the participants in the meeting. In his address, he emphasized the need of an update of the Society's members.

"Defending the interests of our colleagues depends on the organisation and we should contribute to its active operation", stated also Maslarov. In conclusion, the newly elected Chairman of the Sofia branch of the Society of Neurology proposed that monthly membership meetings.
