Drivers who killed people on sidewalks and bus stops would go to prison

Drivers who killed people on sidewalks or bus stops, who run away from the crime scene, have no driver's license, pass at a red light or are speeding by more than 50 km / h over the permitted limit could be punished by imprisonment.

These are the proposed amendments to the Penal Code that GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) should submit to Parliament within a month, became clear during the discussion in the National Assembly, attended by relatives of accident victims, MPs and representatives of the Ministry of Interior. The amendments were presented by Chairman of the Internal Security and Public Order Committee Atanas Atanasov, and Minister of Interior, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

"The penalties will be imprisonment from 1 to 5 years or from 2 to 8 years," said Atanasov.

"The proposed amendments will not allow for the switch to a less grave punishment than imprisonment. The aggressive driving and speeding are among the main reasons for road accidents in Bulgaria, often with a fatal ending," said the Chairman of the Internal Security and Public Order Committee. He added that the changes in the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) would ensure that the prohibition of leaving the country could be imposed in cases of criminal negligence, which caused death.

Another change in the CPP is that agreements between the Prosecution and defendants will not be allowed if a person is killed on the road. “As per your wishes and suggestions, we have banned the negotiation of agreements with prosecutors and judges, without prior notification to the persons concerned” said Interior Minister Tsvetanov, to relatives of victims of road accidents.
