Desislava Atanasova: The fee of GPs should not be increased

The fee of the GP services and the charge per daily hospital stay should not change with the increase in the minimum wage, urged Minister of Health Desislava Atanasova. She is expected to propose the necessary supplement to the proposed amendments to the Health Insurance Act, which have been posted on the website of the Ministry. The final goal is to maintain the current prices.

Currently, the charge stipulated in the Health Insurance Act as a percentage of the minimum wage is BGN 2.70 for a medical examination and BGN 5.40 for hospital stay. Pursuant to an Ordinance of the Council of Ministers of November 9, 2011, the new minimum wage will become BGN 290 as of MAy 1, 2012. In order to avoid an increase of the current patient fee, the decree of the GERB government envisages the Health Ministry to amend the relevant regulations. However, no changes were proposed by the previous management of the Health Department.

As of yesterday, the minimum salary increased by BGN 20 and is already BGN 290. This refers to a normal working time of 8 hours and a 5-day workweek. The minimum hourly wage will become BGN 1.72. Besides, the poverty threshold also increases and will be already BGN 236. In fact, Bulgaria still remains last among the EU countries in terms of salary amount. No increase of pensions is planned - only the minimal pensions will rise by BGN 9 as of July 1. The amount of social and health contributions will be maintained. There will be no change with respect to the social benefits on pregnancy, childbirth and child rearing.
