The fire in the Vitosha Mountain has been put out, but the danger remains

Fire-fighters have done an amazing job with curbing the Vitosha Mountain fire and making cuttings in the forest, said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during a celebration for the Ministry of Internal Affairs Day  (July 5). The conflagration was finally brought under control on Thursday, with just two or three small active spots left.

The PM, deputy Prime Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Anyu Angelov, Minister of Defence, visited the Bistrishko Branishte area the same morning.

Meanwhile, experts from the Forest Institute at BAS stressed the need for decisive measure to stave off the risk of such disasters repeating. The reason is that of the total 500 hectares the unique preserved area encompasses, the fire destroyed 15-20 hectares of wood, where most of the trees were woodworm-eaten and rotten. Trees that haven't been affected by the fire, but suffered the effects of a tornado and pests, could trigger further incidents.

Human error is the probable cause of the disaster, said Damyan Damyanov, deputy executive officer of the Southeast state enterprises during a press conference. The fire started on a non-working day and this arouse suspicions.

Meanwhile, MEP Andrey Kovatchev said in a programme on Nova TV there is a great chance the Vitosha fire was intentional. During the same programme Filip Tsanov, Chairman of the Nature For People and Regions association, was adamant that it couldn't have been so because there was no way someone could have reached the area.
