Decline in public support for organ donation

Public support for organ donation for transplantation has declined since 2009, according to data from a comparative national representative survey of adult Bulgarians, conducted by BBSS Gallup International and commissioned by klassa.bg.

In the autumn of 2009, we assessed the attitude of Bulgarians towards organ donation for the first time. Data from our first survey, surprisingly, showed positive signs – massive public support for donation as a whole, a lack of a predominantly negative attitude among any social group, a small share of Bulgarians who would categorically and officially refuse to donate their organs for transplantation after their death.

Unfortunately, less than three years later, data from this year's survey shows a decline in the share of Bulgarians who support organ donation for transplantation. At present, just over half of the respondents (58%) support this act of empathy, while in October 2009, as many as 68% of Bulgarians supported organ donation, up 10%, compared to today.

Along with the decline in the share of supporters of organ donation, we registered growth in the share of people who are “against” organ donation. In 2009, some 12% of Bulgarians said they were “against” donation for transplantation. This year, the share of Bulgarians who reject donation is 17%.

The groups who predominantly support organ donation for transplantation include:
the youngest adults aged 18-25. Some 63% of them support the idea of helping someone recover and start a new life.
Bulgarians with higher and secondary education – 65% of the people with higher education and 63% of those with secondary education support the idea of organ donation.

Some of the Bulgarians who are more sceptical about organ donation include:
Residents of smaller towns
Bulgarians with a monthly income of up to BGN 250
Bulgarians with primary or lower education.
