A government official to be dismissed for political agitation of students in the town of Peshtera

The Mayor of the town of Peshtera, Steliyan Varsanov, will dismiss the Chairwoman of the Municipal Commission for Combating Anti-Social Acts, Galia Vodenicharova, became clear yesterday. The scandal was caused by a student's contest organised on April 14 by GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) members and political structures in the town. Following each solved task in the competition, the teams received words forming the propaganda sentence "We are GERB, with you we are stronger." The prizes were awarded after the race by the Mayor, Steliyan Varsanov.

"An inspection has started on the case of GERB's political propaganda in the town of Peshtera and if teachers and school directors are found guilty, they will be penalised," stated yesterday Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov in the city of Varna. He specified that he had learned about the case from the media. According to him, the Public Education Act and the Child Protection Act have been violated.

"We must cooperate with young people but I would never venture to think that it is possible to have political agitation among children," commented also earlier today the Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva.

As early as Monday when the scandal broke, the MP from GERB, Krassimira Simeonova, who organised the event, apologised in public. Yesterday, she reiterated that she was ready to assume full responsibility for what had happened but added that she had no intention of leaving the ruling party. She stated that the final sentence "We are GERB, with you we are stronger" was an expression of political zeal on the part of the youth structure of the GERB party.
"Our idea was pure and good but I do agree that this should not have taken place on the Sports day of the children," stated the GERB MP.
