Health Minister Atanasova insists on a lower VAT rate on medicines

Health Minister Desislava Atanasova said on Nova TV that she will be insisting on a lower VAT rate on medicines. Her position is in conflict with that of Finance Minister Simeon Djankov who said on Tuesday that he is not planning to change the value added tax.

“I will continue to insist on a differentiated VAT rate for medicines because I believe that, while in any other sector this will influence consumption to a different degree, in the healthcare sector and with respect to medical products there must be a differentiated VAT rate. This is vital for all who need medicines,” Atanasova stated on Nova TV.

According to her, the reduction of the VAT rate will not only affect patients directly, but also the public fund which pays for the treatment of patients at hospitals and at home through the health insurance contributions charged on all of us. Atanasova commented that she will rely on the MPs to support her on reducing the VAT rate on medicines.
