One tenth of employed Bulgarians worry about possible layoffs at their workplace

Some 22% of employed Bulgarians say that over the last 2 or 3 months there were layoffs at the company/institution where they work. The data was revealed by a national representative survey of TNS BBSS on “The impact of the crisis on employees and firms”, commissioned by klassa.bg. The survey shows a 5% increase in the number of employed Bulgarians who saw layoffs at their workplace, compared to the previous survey in 2009.

Delays in the payment of salaries is another negative effect of the crisis on companies. Some 16% of employed Bulgarians say that over the last 2 or 3 months their salaries were delayed. About one-tenth of Bulgarians (13%, almost unchanged from 2009) say that over the last few months their employers reduced their salaries in order to cope with the tough economic situation.

In spite of the high percentage of Bulgarians who saw layoffs at their workplace, compared to the start of the crisis (2009), a great part of the employees hope that the worst is over. Some 11% of Bulgarian employees say that they expect layoffs at the companies where they work in the near future. This percentage is considerably lower than 3 years ago. In 2009, the percentage of employees worried about future layoffs was twice as high as now – 21%.
