An invasion of foreign radio stations puts GERB and BSP on a collision course

An invasion of Turkish radio stations in Bulgaria caused a parliamentary dispute between the governing party and the opposition on Wednesday. The incident was triggered by the 2011 annual report of the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC). According to Georgi Bozhinov of the party Coalition for Bulgaria, the report deviates from taxpayers' real problems, focusing on the market share and other economic indicators of mobile operators instead of addressing the persistent problem of jammed Bulgarian National Radio's transmission by foreign radio stations. CRC Chairman Veselin Bozhkov, who was also present at the parliamentary session, dismissed opposition criticism. He said that a lot has been done in the last three years towards solving Bulgarian radio stations' problems, which have been steadily aggravated during the period of transition towards a market economy. It is a complex case given the well-known fact that VHF frequencies are not restricted by national borders, Bozhkov noted. However, as part of the much stronger Turkish economy, Istanbul has more than 100 radio stations, while in Bulgaria, there are only three national radio operators – BNR, Darik and Focus.
