Professional drivers to reissue their driving licences every 5 years as of January 2013

Professional drivers will reissue their driving licences every 5 years instead of every 10 years as was the case so far. This was decided by Parliament on Wednesday after it finally adopted amendments to the Bulgarian Personal Documents Act. Category C and D driving licences were valid for 10 years so far, while the validity period of category B driving licences will remain unchanged.

The opposition objected because this would increase the costs for the drivers in question but the ruling party explained that it was observing an EU directive. Everybody who reissues their category C and D driving licences by January 19, 2013 will have a driving licence with a validity period of 10 years. “However, if they reissue their category C or D driving licence after that date, the validity period will be five years pursuant to Bulgaria's irrevocable commitment to the EU,” Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Interior, Veselin Vuchkov, said.
