Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov: There will be no visas for the UK

“There is no probability of the UK introducing visas for Bulgarians. What will happen is that as of 2014, all restrictions on working in EU countries will be lifted,” Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov stated on bTV, commenting on recent British publications. According to them, visa control is being considered on the Island in order to prevent an influx of immigrants from some European countries such as Romania and Bulgaria. In an interview for Sunday Times, British Home Secretary Theresa May stated that the European Directive allowing 500 million people to travel freely within the EU should be revised.

A source of Sunday Times claims that a relaxed visa regime for some countries and the introduction of visas for others is being considered.

According to Nickolay Mladenov, however, this is a matter of interpretation and pre-election propaganda. He pointed out that in the EU there are principles of free movement of people and capital, and the UK is one of the countries benefiting the most from this unified market. “It will not work if we begin choosing which rules to observe and which not,” argued Minister Mladenov.
