CCP bans online trade of nutrition supplements

The Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) has banned online retailers from using misleading advertisements crediting supplements and food implements they sell with healing property, the body itself announced. "Since there is no evidence to support retailers' claims that these goods actually possess healing qualities, we think that consumers are presented with false and misleading information tantamount to unfair commercial practice under the Consumer Protection Act. The sanction for such violation is up to BGN 15,000," the statement read.

Said supplements are claimed to help the treatment and prevention of oncological diseases, hepatitis, AIDS, HIV, diabetes, ulcer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatism, arthritis, allergies, hypertonia, a weak immune system, obesity, fatigue, etc. The supplements are recommended as a way of ensuring patients stay cancer-free after they have been operated on, regulating blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels, and as a product with a detox effect.

The online retailers failed to present CCP experts with convincing scientific proof that shows without a trace of doubt that these supplements actually produce the results consumers are led to believe they can expect by using them.
