Metropolitan Kiril: Unity of the Church is important

The unity of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Christians and the Church of Christ is the most necessary and important thing, Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Kiril said on Sunday in Sofia.

When there is a different opinion, it should be justified, because the unity of the church is very important, it is in its base. Some people have to comply with this thing, because it does not concern ordinary things, but important events in the life of BOC, Metropolitan Kiril added. He expressed his hope that all the bishops will come at the next meeting of the Holy Synod and explicitly said that they may be absent only if they have a good reason. Everyone should come to the meetings of the Holy Synod and all the bishops should decide in unity and unanimously, the bishop was adamant. He said that 11 people of the Holy Synod have already recognised the choice of a Deputy Chairman of the BOC.

"Patriarch Maxim tried to achieve the unity required by the Holy Fathers. The situation was the same at the Oecumenical Councils, because according to Orthodoxy, dogmatic and ordinary issues can be decided only through unity of the members of the councils," he told the laity. "Thankfully, Maxim led the church through fire and water and in the worst times of atheism and schism. He called to stand firm in the faith, in the unity of the Bulgarian church and he did this," added Metropolitan Kiril.

Recently, he came into an overt conflict with Bishop Nikolai of Plovdiv, who questioned his election as a Deputy Chairman of the BOC.
