NRA expects 2% revenue growth in 2012

As of November 26, the National Revenue Agency (NRA) has collected BGN 11.7 bn in revenue, which puts projections for the whole 2012 at around BGN 13.35 bn, or about 2% more than planned budget revenues. According to NRA chief executive Krasimir Stefanov, who revealed the figures on BNR, better-than-expected results are a direct consequence of the agency's improved effectiveness.

"As we all know, the process of connecting retailers' cash registers and vending machines to the NRA system met with great resistance," Stefanov reminded. "Since the introduction of cash registers and systems which monitor the level of fuel in petrol station reservoirs on April 1, fuel sales have jumped nearly 7% (14 million litres), as measured by data for October. Small petrol stations record the biggest increase, which only proves our theory that, all economic parameters being equal, registered fuel sales are on the rise following the integration of cash registers into the NRA system, bringing the grey economy into the light," Stefanov said.

He stressed that NRA has waged an uncompromising war with tax frauds, alongside other responsible agencies like the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Agency for National Security and the Prosecutor's Office. More than 1,000 citizens and firms who stood trial for an attempt to defraud the tax authorities were convicted in 2011.

According to Stefanov, the largest taxpayers in the country are 1,000 firms registered in the Large Taxpayers and Employers Directorate. They account for roughly half of budget revenues.
