President Rosen Plevneliev: The election should not be a result of party arrangements

I do not think that the election of a new constitutional judge should be a result of party arrangements. It is very important that it stems from different candidates, debates in Parliament and, then, may the best man win, President Rosen Plevneliev said on Monday regarding the ongoing scandal after the failure of Veneta Markovska's nomination and the failed nomination of UDF President (1997-2002) Petar Stoyanov, who withdrew his candidacy.

With my actions I stood firmly behind the Constitution and I will continue to do so in the future. Of course, people in Parliament also bear their responsibility, Plevneliev added.

Asked whether he would sign the decree for a Chief Prosecutor if he didn't like the elected candidate, or he would proceed as in the case of Veneta Markovska, Rosen Plevneliev said that he has to be honest with Bulgarian citizens, and they do not expect their President to enter political games and dependencies.

"They expect him to be above all parties and to be wise and just. Therefore, I will follow the debate closely. I expect concepts, I expect a lot of questions to be asked and I expect their answers. Then, of course, I will have my arguments as well," said Plevneliev.

The President commented on another topical matter - the issue of EU funds for the next programming period. I am worried about the possibility that the next programming period 2014 - 2020 may not include an Operational Programme Education and Science. I think that this is important and I would like to encourage the Government so that they will really pay attention and plan the next EU funds in such a way that there will exist an independent OP Science and Education. This will be focused, this will help the most important thing in Bulgaria - talent and skills," said Rosen Plevneliev.
