Facilities for solar electricity production rise four-fold in half a year

Facilities producing electricity from the sun have risen four times over a period of half a year, representatives of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) said during the Energy Forum in Sofia. While by the end of March, the country had photovoltaics with a total capacity of 226 megawatts, by the end of September, these had already increased to 860 megawatts. Besides the rise in electricity prices for individuals and businesses with 13% - 16% in July necessitated by this, it also loaded the electricity system, especially in eastern Bulgaria, a Commission expert said. He reminded that the purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES) is required, but at higher preferential prices. The boom in renewable energy facilities will also necessitate the construction of conventional power plants which will work during the time when there is no sun and wind, i.e. to balance the system - which further increases the cost of electricity. SEWRC indicated that, in this connection, the construction of a gas power station is also expected.

According to SEWRC's experts, the establishment of an actually functioning energy exchange was postponed again, this time for 2014-2015, despite promises that this would have happened two years ago. In this regard, business representatives noted that it is not possible to have a real market for electricity in the country, provided that prices for electricity from renewable energy sources are subsidised, moreover.
