Borissov: We cannot withdraw from the nuclear energy projects

Should, in a few years, Turkey launch into operation four nuclear reactors, while Bulgaria pays about BGN 800 / MWh for solar electricity generation, what industry will we develop?,'' reckoned yesterday Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at the Conference ''Sector-based Strategy for Attracting Investment''. Will the European Union protect our rights if we withdraw from the nuclear energy projects. Then, I will ask what will be the competitiveness of the Bulgarian and Turkish economy. At that point, we will have a fiasco and there will be nobody to hear us, added the Prime Minister.

We signed an 18-month contract on the Belene NPP construction project with the consultant HCBS (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation) Holding PLC and they promised to deliver, within two months, the basic points of the construction analysis of the new nuclear power plant, specified Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, Traicho Traikov. According to him, following the accident at the Japanese Fukushima NPP, the Belene NPP project analysis will focus on safety in order not to construct an inefficient plant against the decommissioning of which Bulgaria must fight.

Borissov asked again why Bulgaria failed to generate more electricity from hydro-power plants as it is not profitable to invest in electricity production from renewable energy sources. In Austria, 80% of the rivers are used for electricity generation, while in our country we use less than 20%. Why has Bulgaria focused on solar and wind energy production, given that we have the opportunity to generate electricity from rivers, asked the PM.

The strategy for attracting investments sets priorities without neglecting other economic sectors, said Traikov. They are selected on the basis of several criteria involving the historical and natural resources of Bulgaria, and its global interests over the next decade. The purpose of the document is for Bulgaria, in 2020, to generate GDP per capita of 60% of that of the EU. Currently, Bulgaria's GDP per capita is 30% of the EU average - we rank last in terms of the poverty threshold. In fact, global competition for investments is harsh as Bulgaria is struggling for major projects in manufacturing with at least another 10-12 countries. Besides, competition in the field of outsourcing and information technology often involves 30-40 countries.
