Just one in seven Bulgarian employers to hire employees

Only one in seven employers shared plans for hiring personnel in the first quarter of next year, according to a survey by Manpower. Of the 750 employers who were surveyed, 13% indicated that they intend to hire employees during the period from January to March, compared to 17% who plan to reduce staff. Like in the previous quarter, employers in finance, insurance, business services and real estate sectors reported the strongest hiring intentions. The employment rate in the sector fell by 6 percentage points, compared to the previous quarter, but remained unchanged on an annual basis. "Compared to the same period last year, employers who say they will cut staff increased by 7%," said Nadia Vassileva, Managing Director of Manpower for Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia.

Employers in all five regions of the country surveyed shared negative hiring intentions for the first quarter of 2013. Employers in Sofia and Plovdiv have the least pessimistic plans, reporting an employment rate of -1%. Employers in the regions of Rousse and Bourgas are the most pessimistic in terms of expectations for hiring in the first quarter of next year, with rates of -12% and -10%, respectively. Generally, the lowest unemployment rates are traditionally reported by the three largest regions in Bulgaria. A number of international companies, such as Coca-Cola Enterprises, TELUS International, Sutherland Global Services, Ingram Micro, etc., locate their businesses in the country in order to benefit from the domestic market and the availability of talented people," commented Mrs. Vassileva. "But communities in other regions are making efforts to attract foreign investment by providing various incentives in order to make them more attractive to new businesses, so that they will focus their attention on more cities in the country."
